What does religion have to do in a political debate? That's not the real issue we should be focusing on is it? Shouldn't we be focusing more on important things like global warming or how you're going to get the troops back home and the immigrant policies?
That's the comment one of my dear friends made a few days ago and here's what I think:
It's not important to see whether or not the future leader of this country worships Jesus Christ. No, that is hardly the issue. But what is more important is the leader's moral standings. And that is precisely the role religion plays. I couldn't care less whether the future President prays the rosary or not, but I do care if he/she values human life. If the President's religion limited the role of women to the home, how can I be sure that my rights will be taken care of? If the President is an extremist, how can I be sure that my son will not be drafted into a religious war? And if the President believes that killing is not a sin, how can I be sure that my daughter will get home safely from her mission?
I think it is near impossible to lead your people into life and death situations without some sort of grounding in faith. Only when I can decipher the way you think, that I can trust you to deal with the real important issues. Like the war, heath care and global warming.
